Agenda for safety initiative at schools

Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC) in partnership with Australian Direct Aid (an Australian Consulate Sponsored Initiative), United Way of Bengaluru and our Knowledge Partner Enfold Proactive Health Trust organized a program on ‘Setting an Agenda for Safety initiatives at schools’. These initiatives will be implemented with support of B.CLIP ( B.PAC’s Civic Leadership Incubator Program) leaders and elected representatives.
Safety of Children is one of the key issues facing us all. Governments, both Central and State have introduced laws, such as POCSO and POSH to enable a safe environment for our children and women. The Karnataka Government has gone one step further and introduced a Child Protection Policy for schools. However, the challenge is to build greater awareness, create larger community engagement and ensure implementation of these policies, to truly guarantee a safe environment for children.
To address this, the program will work with over 200 Government schools across 10 assembly constituencies in Bengaluru to implement the Child Protection Policy i.e setting up Child Protection Committee in school, conducting sensitization and training programs for teaching and non-teaching staff and parents and self-awareness workshops for students. The program will implement preventive and pre-emptive measures such as setting up Mena Club and fixing complaint/suggestion box in schools along with safety collaterals and track quality of implementation.
Ms. Chitra Talwar, Director B.SAFE welcomed the audience and introduced the program. Neha, an expert from Enfold Proactive Health Trust conducted an interactive session on Child Protection Policy and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). The audience included teachers, parents and citizens interested to work for the cause along with B.PAC’s B.CLIP leaders.
“Theinitiative will help understand the gaps in schools and to put in place measures to address issues. B.PAC is happy to lead and collaborate with expert partners and elected representatives for this program and cover a sizable number of schools to ensure Karnataka’s Child Protection Policy is implemented well” said Chitra Talwar, Director, B.PAC.
