After a very energetic flaging off of the plastic bag ban in Koramangala on February 14 by Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and Mayor B N Manjunatha Reddy along with Corporator Chandrappa and others, all the block representatives decided on a schedule to spread the awareness to each and every trader in their locality.
Since then, the volunteers from all the blocks have explained to every trader the ill effects of plastic bags and suggested them all alternative ideas that are available besides eco-friendly and not expensive ones.
Giving a fillip to the anti-plastic movement, many temples in and around Koramangala have already adopted green practises.
By Mahashivaratri festival all temple authorities have confirmed to volunteers that they will be completely plastic free zone. This action comes in the wake of volunteers covering the temples in 5th and 6th blocks during the past few days.
Even the shopkeepers who the volunteeres approached have been very co-operative and are trying to source all the alternative containers and bags.
“It is tiring and exhausting but a very satisfying experience”, is what almost all the volunteers are expressing in Koramangala.
On Tuesday, February 23rd all block volunteers are meeting to take stock of the situation. “We will then do one more round of all major streets where there are many traders”, said a volunteer Padmashree Balaram. “We sincerely hope that by February 27th all traders will comply with the plastic ban and that we dont have to take action on any vendor”, she added. All consumers are also expected to carry their own bag and containers to help this initiative in becoming a success and keeping Koramangala Clean and Green.
