Environmental Synergies in Development (ENSYDE) in partnership with Saahas (both NGOs), is implementing an initiative on responsible e-waste collection and awareness within households and institutions in Bangalore.
This initiative has been made possible with the support of companies such as VMWare. In the last year and a half, we have reached out to over 600 institutions and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to participate in this programme. The bE-Responsible initiative has tied up with a Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) authorized recycler, to ensure that the e-waste collected is managed in a socially and environmentally responsible way. This initiative, started in October 2016 covers 20 Wards, has collected over 7.5 Tonnes of e-waste and reached out to around 6 lakh individuals through campaigns and outreach programmes. Through this they have reduced 2151 kgs of carbon emissions, diverted 44 kgs of toxic metals from landfills and recovered 521 kgs of total metals.
The campaigns are conducted to sensitize stakeholders on the need for formal and responsible collection and disposal of e-waste; and the environmental, safety and health implications of the informal system of e-waste recycling that exists today. They run campaigns in various public events, schools, colleges, malls, hospitals and resident welfare associations  through workshops, campaigns, emails, and social media.
To facilitate convenient disposal options for people, we have placed drop boxes at various public locations. India Posts and Bangalore One Centers have collaborated with our program. Through this exciting partnership, we have placed 13 drop-off-boxes (public collection points listed in the table ) at these centers. They have also recently installed 3 e-waste drop boxes at MK Retail Stores in HSR Layout, Sarjapur Road and Indiranagar to encourage residents to dispose their e-waste. Besides this, they have a plan to install 15 more public bins in Bangalore.
In addition, their mobile van does periodic pickup of e-waste based on schedule intimated to participating RWAs and Institutions in advance.
For bulk pick up their hotline number # 7349737586 may be called.
