Namma Bengaluru Foundation and the Bengaluru Residents Associations Confederation Ensemble (BRACE) have jointly sent a letter to Vajubhai Vala, the Governor of the State of Karnataka, requesting him not to sign the Karnataka Urban Development Act (Amendment) Bill that was recently declared passed in the Assembly amidst a furore.
The bill seeks to reduce the open space requirements for localities from 15 % to 10 % and reduce the Civic Amenity site requirements from 10 % of total layout area to 5 %. In the first instance, the provisions are applicable to 250 cities and towns in Karnataka (excluding Bangalore City).
However, many media outlets have quoted sources in Government to the effect that similar amendments are likely to be brought in to the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act (KMC) Act and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) Act which regulate these issues in Bangalore City.
The letter requests the Governor to use his good offices as the First Citizen of the State to reject the bill and send it back to the Government with a directive to have extensive public consultations initiated before taking any action.
