It is very important for seniors to be aware of safety and security measures available for their protection, more so in the backdrop of recently reported crimes here in Bengaluru. For this reason, BeautifulYears, a startup providing senior care solutions, had organised a special security awareness program for senior citizens, in association with Bangalore City Police, on May 19 at YWCA hall in Koramangala.
During the programme, guidelines and information on how to hire domestic staff were given by a reputed security agency, Samurai Secura. They explained the importance of police verification, and monitoring hired help via CCTV, so that any abusive or suspicious behaviour towards seniors can be detected quickly.
Inspector Suresh from Koramangala Police Station, had an interactive session with all senior citizens, who attended the programme.
The main takeaways from his talk, were as follows
* Use the elder helpline, 1090, for any kind of grievance or help needed from the police, by the senior citizens of Bangalore, at any time of the day. The police also provides counselling services through this helpline.
* It is important to install CCTV cameras at each entrance, and make sure the street view is also captured. This can help the police nab the culprits much quicker.
* Please inform the police of any suspicious activity seen in your neighbourhood, even if it may seem minor.
* Change your walking routes or coming/going timings periodically as criminal elements always attack after careful observation of routine activities, so this will throw them off guard.
* He invited the Resident Welfare Associations to come forward with information on the seniors living in the neighbourhood, so that police will make sure to patrol those beats especially in the night.
Padmashree Balaram, an active member of Koramangala 1st block Residents’ Welfare Association, explained how neighbours can be the first and most effective protection against any kind of attack.
Soumya Ramalinga Reddy, a young volunteer and environmentalist, encouraged senior citizens to use Bangalore Police and Traffic police’s digital media platforms like twitter and facebook, to submit their grievances and requests.
There was a product showcase of useful gadgets and devices including security cameras, remote locking systems, alarm systems and panic buttons from BeautifulYears and their partners.
It was a useful session and more such interactions and definitely required between senior citizens and law enforcing authorities.
