Volunteers working in the solid waste management and Koramangala Plastic Carry Bag Ban have requested the traders, shop owners, companies, eateries and commercial establishments in Koramangala and adjoining areas to join and support in making Koramangala a plastic free zone. Here is why we need to ban single use plastic lThe single use trash, or disposable plastic trash is posing an environmental and health hazard. lWith segregation in 2 Bin 1 Bag methodology taking off in the city, the volume of dry waste being collected is getting phenomenal. lIt is found that a lot of this is from one time use plastic like, carry bags, soiled plastic from packaged food, disposable plates and cups etc. lConsidering this- BBMP, Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Corporator Chandrappa , RWAs, residents, volunteers of Koramangala are working towards a plastic free Koramangala. lThe ban is only on the UGLY plastic. lThe flag off of this initiative is with The Walkathon is on 14th Feb near Ganesha temple, Koramangala 20th main 5th block lThere is a need for your active participation in this programme and effort. lOnly YOU and US can do it, By saying NO to customers who do not carry their own bag to shop you would be helping the environment, the health of neighbourhood, and the animals like cows and dogs in our neighbourhood. lEnforcement by BBMP begins on February 27. lYou could tell consumers to ‘Bring your own bag’ or join the ‘Borrow the bag scheme’. lLet us discipline ourselves.The key is with you. lManage your own waste responsibly: Here are some tips for managing your waste responsibly and individually at source without relying too much on the BBMP. Provision stores l Segregate your waste l Keep paper waste and Plastic waste in gunny bags separately l Tie up with the local raddiwalal and deposit your paper/plastic waste with them. lTreat your waste as a resource and see the difference Eateries (small)juice junctions/ sandwich/chat corners l Use glass tumblers or reusable plastic glasses, lWash and re use them lAvoid plastic disposables being extensively used at such places lAvoid lining of plastic for serving sandwiches and chats and the likes lUse the leaf plates/ leaves for lining Restaurants lTry eliminating plastic bags from your packaging lReduce your serving to reduce food wastage lKnow that your food waste when free from plastic can be converted into biogas or energy l Ensure good quality green waste leaves your premises Vendors / push carts lEliminate plastic bags l Keep newspaper handy and make cones to serve your customer l Give your leftover waste and rotten veggies at designated places l Keep baskets of plastic to serve customers Chaat walas lUse leaf cups and plates lDon’t use styrofoam lAvoid using plastic lining Beauty parlors / saloons l Ensure your waste goes with the reject waste of BBMP lUse ecofriendly material for clients that generate less waste lAlways dispose waste responsibly -Sheela Ladha, Civic Activist & Volunteer
