Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA) in partnership with the Bangalore Traffic Police organised the fourth “Positive Strokes “campaign, a road safety initiative to reward good road behaviour.
Positive Strokes is a behaviour change and community-oriented intervention that is aimed at creating safe and rule-compliant road users. Positive Strokes does this by identifying and rewarding good road users and at the same time influencing potential road users who volunteer to look for these good behaviours. The programme was in effect on Saturday at three Junctions, Forum Mall junction in Koramangala, Queens Statue Circle (Near St. Marks Church) and Town Hall, Bengaluru.
Dr Manjunath Sadashiva, Director, Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA), said, “Positive Strokes applauds good road behaviour and encourages citizens to repeat such behaviours”. He further added, “Young adults are growing up in a society where they see rampant traffic violations. For too long good road users have suffered frustration and even derision from those that don’t follow rules. It’s time to reward and encourage good road behaviour. If more and more road users start showing positive traits on the road, others will follow their example. This is a unique initiative seeking to engage with the youth and gives them the experience of identifying positive behaviour and rewarding it.”
During this fourth campaign, in addition to giving away spot commendations at a traffic junction, a junction audit was done, giving volunteers the opportunity to capture feedback about the junction.
The junction audit gives specific actionable information that can help make the junction safer and more efficient. Another novelty of this edition was that it consisted of volunteers from different institutions/ organizations taking up a junction to monitor. The participating organizations were: Volunteers from BOSCH (Forum Mall junction in Koramangala), Volunteers from iGATE & St Joseph’s College of Commerce students (Queens Statue Circle (Near St. Marks Church)) and Volunteers from Bishop Cottons Women’s’ Christian College (Town Hall Junction).
