Koramangala till recently was a pretty safe area with hardly any crime taking place. But this tag no more holds good. Despite police patrolling, chain-snatching incidents and robberies seem to be on the rise is what the residents feel.
In the same time, due to fear many small crimes are not reported to the police at all. So the Koramangala 8th Block Residents’ Association headed by L Nagaraj and Secretary B D Nagaraj along with other office bearers and accompanied by Spoorthy Mahila Sangha office bearers met the Koramangala Police Inspector Prashanth Babu recently urging him to increase police patrol in the locality and put an end to these crimes. The association has given two separate memorandums stating the rise of chain snatching incidents in the locality besides other crimes.
“Boosting security only seems to be aimed at bolstering public confidence but isn’t actually stopping crime. Instances of mugging, chain snatching and other such crimes have increased and it’s not just in Koramangala, the neighbouring localities too are witnessing a rise in the incidence of chain snatching, theft, robbery etc”, say the residents of 8th block citing four cases of chain snatching incidents last two months of which two have been registered with the police.
“Bike borne men had snatched a chain from a lady walking down the street near Shiva theatre during morning hours. Another similar incident was reported near Narayan School. With these incidents, the ladies of the block fear to walk on streets in the locality,” said B D Nagaraj. Hence we decided to give a memorandum to police and seek help, he said.
One evening during the weekend two months back Koramangala 3rd Block RWA President Ajay Reddy too witnessed a purse/bag snatching incident near the Koramangala Club road while he was returning from NGV. A bike borne men snatched the bag from a lady walking down the road which contained debit/ credit cards and some cash. Though Ajay was driving the car tried to stop them, but the duo fled after riding on the footpath.
A theft incident that has been reported is from J Block is a sports bicycle that too during daytime. The CCTV footage taken from the neighbouring house reveals how the youth comes sits on the footpath for a while, then enters the gate and opens the lock of the bicycle and simple rides away with it. One more recent incident is that a house was burgled on 10th Main in 3rd block.
Similarly few months back, there were three more burglaries reported from the 3rd Block but were not complained to police.
Police chowki demanded
Further the 8th Block RWA memorandum states that theft of two-wheelers during night time has increased. The junction of Corporation Bank in 8th Block has become very busy till midnight so they have sought a police chowki or police patrol be stationed there. Besides they have asked for police beats in all interior streets of the block.
Lay road humps
Another is implementation of no parking zone near Sharavana Hotel junction. Also laying of road humps near Corporation Bank, Lawrence School, Shiva Theatre road, 2nd Main road, etc. Koramangala Police Inspector Prashanth Babu has assured to look into the matter and solve the problems.
