Karnataka State Pollution Control Board has taken a bold and new initiative this year to aim at Zero Pollution particularly in our villages and create awareness in protecting our natural resources for improved sustainability in crop productivity. This is a welcome-move to regenerate greenery and adopt sustainable measures in our village – economy. The aim is to utilize Land without degradation, water without pollution and the surroundings without destroying whatever little greenery or trees are left in the villages for varied purposes. Towards these aims, KSPCB in Collaboration with Environment Protection Institute(R) has been working with Rural Schools For this year, the Theme selected is Greening & Composting”.
The villages are polluted with straw, cow dung and urine strewed all over emanating foul smell. Besides, house hold waste dumps are a major cause for spreading disease through flies and mosquitoes. KSPCB wants to eliminate these causes of Pollution in Rural Areas. Environment Protection Institute has a tested new method of Composting. This is being promoted through Demonstrations.
High Quality Organic Manures are not available on a large scale as required in Crop Production. At the same time, Industrial Organic Wastes such as Sludges have not found a right way of Dispoal. Thus, KSPCB has Launched a Programme of suitably introducing Sludges’ as recommended by Research findings, to the Farmers for the First Time.
Thus, Field Demonstrations of Greening the Earth and utilising the Waste Materials at the Farm level for making Compost are taken up for 17 Rural Schools for this year’s Competitions. The Results are: The first prize goes to Government High School, Kaggalahalli, Kanakapura Tq, on “Composting and Eco-activities”. Farmers in the area are keen to adopt this process.
