The 2013 Mahaboob Nagar bus tragedy that took the lives of 45 Bengalureans is still haunting us. The lives of the innocent passengers could have been saved if there were to be a good emergency exit option in the bus. Sadly, this tragedy was followed by many such tragedies across the country that claimed many lives.
Despite this, no proper emergency exit is in place in most of the transport corporations/private operators. The ghastly incident moved a group of engineering students from Gopalan College of Engineering and Management to find a viable solution so that commuters travelling in buses have a safe exit option in emergency.
Following the accidents, the students went on to study the reasons for the increasing deaths. The students found out that there were a number of disadvantages in the current emergency exit system. Currently, it is difficult for the passengers to open the emergency exit door. There is only one emergency exit door present which is manually operated. During emergency, people rush to the single door and it is difficult to save themselves. As the present emergency system is not automated, only a few may break open the emergency exit window without risking themselves.
Added to this, the luxury buses have windows which are completely sealed with only one emergency exit window. For luxury buses, tight sealing of the door and windows are required to prevent the cold air escaping outside.
In their unique project, the students have demonstrated how every window in an AC bus can act as an emergency exit door. In a nutshell, we can say that the students’ project works in a way where in every window will work as an emergency door.
The sensors would be placed across the bus. When the bus catches fire, the sensor detects and actuates the linear actuator. This linear actuator releases pressure and the tube will be deflated.
Deflating the tube, increases clearance and the window glass slides down and the passengers can easily escape.
The project has a number of advantages.
lThe system is both automatic and manual
lEvery window acts as an emergency exit door
lMaximum number of passenger lives can be saved
lWindows will be air tight in normal condition, can slide in case of emergency
lFree from wear adjustment
