Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Bengaluru Development Minister KJ George and Minister R Roshan Baig launched 25 new hi-tech Compactors(garbage handling machines) with each having a 10 tonne capacity.
BBMP will handle a total of 250 tonnes of waste by using these compactors.
The compactors arrest the foul smell of garbage as well as the leachates while transporting them to the processing units. The unique feature of solid waste management in Bengaluru is that the BBMP is going for scientific disposal and has cut its dependence on landfills.
BBMP has minimised the dependence on landfills to a great extent. It has seven waste treatment plants across the City, which are primarily wet waste-processing units producing compost. The dry waste is baled and sent to industries as fuel for their furnaces. Almost 2,200 tonnes of waste goes to the seven new processing units.
“With the new compactors, the BBMP administration will be able to better solid waste management,” said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The palike had only 48 compactors till now, these new ones cost Rs 35 lakh each. This new batch is fitted with GPS trackers to ensure that the garbage is not diverted to illegal dumpyards and the corporation is not billed unfairly. BBMP will eventually buy 200 of these compactors.
