KERC directs BESCOM to submit a compliance report on hazardous installations

B.PAC had filed a petition against BESCOM’s unsafe electrical installations across Bengaluru City including Koramangala.
Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC) on behalf of the citizens of Bengaluru city had submitted a petition against B.SECOM’s unsafe electrical installations across Bangalore City. Prior to this, B.PAC conducted an on-field survey covering 21 locations, identifying more than 200 dangerous electrical installations, awaiting major tragedies to happen.The pictures submitted were self-explanatory that none of these installations fulfils the safety norms recommended by the Central Electricity Authority.
B.PAC requested the commission to direct BESCOM to replace all dangerous installations in public access areas in an expeditious and time bound manner.
The Commission admitted B.PAC’s petition & directed Managing Director, BESCOM totake immediate action to rectify the hazardous installations prevailing in the distribution network across the city.
Speaking on this development T.V.Mohandas Pai, Vice President, and B.PAC said “We welcome the letter from commission to BESCOM. The Commission is working to protect the consumer interest in an unbiased manner. The onus to act positively rests with BESCOM. It’s high time that BESCOM to complies with safety standards while having public installations”.
Revathy Ashok, CEO, B.PAC said “B.PAC urges the Citizens of the city to report unsafe electrical installation via SPOTTER,  a free Android App which facilitates a Quick Click of a Picture and upload.B.PAC would like to monitor these locations with the support of citizens till the issue is resolved to satisfaction”.
lOpen distribution boxes (either unlocked or missing doors) and hanging loose cables along the streets are another threat, inviting enormous electrical accidents.
l The death due to electrocution is on rise year on year.
lMoreover these installations deface the so called “smartest among the smart cities’ of India.
lUnprotected distribution transformers and outdated switchgears installed by BESCOM on footpaths and main streets not only denies the right of way of the public but are turning death traps during monsoon.
