CBSE REGIONAL LEVEL SCIENCE EXHIBITION- 2015
The purpose of creating technological gadgets is to enable common people to use them and enrich their everyday lives. This is precisely what SiddharthKarki and VarunBalaji of Grade 10, National Public School, HSR Layout had in mind when they created HandSight- an aid for the visually impaired, which enables them to navigate in an unknown environment.
Their project secured the top position amongst more than 50 entries from all over Karnataka, at the CBSE Regional Level Science Exhibition 2015, held at the PSBB Leadership Learning Academy last week.
HandSight gives an audio output and a haptic feedback about an upcoming obstacle, thus alerting its user. An appliance of convenience, worn on the wrist, it replaces any conventional electronic cane or other such device used by the blind. It can be used not only by the visually impaired, but also by people such as firefighters, who may work in an environment of low visibility.
“We planned to go beyond science in school, and extend our knowledge to help those who need it most,” says Siddharth.
“Accessibility is a huge problem for a large section of people, and we wanted to enable them to overcome that,” Varun opines.
The two students are excited to participate In the National levels of the competition to be held in IIT Delhi, where HandSight will compete against nearly 300 other projects.
