3-Day ‘Karnataka Surfing Festival-Indian Open of Surfing’

The Government of Karnataka, Tourism Department in association with Mantra Surf Club, Kanara Surfing, and Water Promotion Council will be hosting the 3-day, ‘Karnataka Surfing Festival- Indian Open of Surfing – 2017’, India’s biggest surfing festival, which will be held from May 26 – 28, 2017, at Sasihithlu Beach, Mangaluru.

Priyank Kharge, Minister, IT BT & Tourism said, ‘The festival aims to promote the beaches of the state as the premier adventure destination in the country that is suitable for various water based activities such as ‘surfing’ and ‘stand up paddling’. It also aims to make surfing a major sport in India, considering that India has a 5422.6 km mainland coastline.’

‘The three-day event offer the perfect platform for water sports enthusiasts across all ages from India and abroad. After the success of the debut event in 2016, the Indian Open of Surfing – 2017 is set to push the surfing culture in India a step ahead.’ He added.

The event will witness both men and women competing in nine categories – Indians under-14, Indians Groms under-16, Indian juniors (17 – 22), Indian seniors (22 – 30), Indian master (above 30), women of all ages, open category (Indians and foreigners) and stand-up paddling (men and women).

The events will be judged by judges from the International Surfing Association (ISA) along with the Surfing federation of India.
