Next time when you head to a supermarket, you may be able to add medicines to your shopping list. The union government is said to have approached supermarket and hypermarket chains including Future Group’s Big Bazaar and Aditya Birla Group’s More to propel the countrywide expansion of its fair price ‘Jan Aushadhi’ shops by opening counters in their stores.
Also a MoU with Government of Karnataka for launching 200 Jan Aushadhi centers at Bengaluru has been done. It will be officially launched on 2nd October, 2016 . This was decided early this week at New Delhi when the Health & Family Welfare Minister of Karnataka Ramesh Kumar and senior officials called on Union Minister Ananth Kumar.
“These stores are expected to stock and sell over 580 varieties of high quality medical consumables, including unbranded generic medicines and several essential drugs, at affordable rates.
The prices of these medicines will be much lower than their branded equivalent, and especially benefit patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart diseases”, he said.
“Of the 200 stores, 168 will be set up at District and Taluk Government Hospitals, while 32 will be opened at Community Health Centres across the State,” he added.
