RWAs, BBMP, NGOs & Residents join hands to make plastic-free Koramangala, and neighbourhood – Adugodi, Ejipura and Jakkasandra
February 14 Plastic Bag Ban movement & ‘Bring Your Bag’ will be launched in the presence of the Minister Ramalinga Reddy in Koramangala
This Valentine’s Day (Feb 14), the residents of Koramangala under the banner of various RWAs especially the women from the Koramangala First Block Residents’ Welfare Association along with the BBMP and NGOs will be celebrating with a difference – A movement called ‘Bring Your Bag’ will be launched so that the ‘Plastic Bag Ban’ in Koramangala and adjoining areas will become effective even before the Government Order comes into force sometime later this month.
A preliminary meeting was held at the residence of Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy where the BBMP Joint Commissioner Hemachandra, Executive Engineer Srinivas Reddy, Soumya Ramalinga Reddy, Corporator Chandrappa, office-bearers of the First Block RWA Annie, Padmashree Balaram, Rajendra Babu of ST Bed RWA, Kishan Naik from Jakkasandra RWA, Govardhan Reddy, Umesh from 5th Block Youths Association and others attended.
At the meeting, the First Block RWA office bearers explained about the concept of ‘Bring Your Bag’ and Plastic Bag Ban’ movement to the Minister and how successful it is in the neighbouring HSR Layout.
The Minister giving his assent said that that very soon the Government will notify the plastic bag ban across the State as soon as the draft notification comes before the Cabinet with some clarifications done.
BBMP Joint Commissione (South) Hemachandra said that he is ready to provide with his enforcement, let this people-driven programme be successful.
After getting nod from the Minister and the BBMP officials, the residents called upon all RWAs in the neighbourhood – Koramangala, Ejipura, Adugodi and Jakkasandra for a action-plan meeting at the Cartman Park, the next day.
This was attended by the BBMP officials headed by Joint Commissioner Hemachandra, Srinivas Reddy, Corporators from all the four wards – M Chandrappa, Ramachandra, Manjula Sampath, and Saraswathamma, besides the representatives all RWAs in the locality, traders and NGOs. There, Dr Shanti and Smitha from HSR told about what they did in HSR layout for plastic carry bag ban. Also they gave a power-point explaination on why there should be plastic carry bag ban and how succesful it was in HSR layout. Further they told about the necessity of segregating waste at homes and making of compost.
BBMP Executive Engineer Srinivas Reddy said that how succesfull were the similar programmes undertaken in Yelahanka ward by Minister Krishna Byregowda and team. If it is success there, here also the vibrant Koramangala will be succesful, he said and extended full support.
“Let’s make Koramangala a model ward in implementing plastic bag ban” said BBMP JC Hemachandra.
BBMP AEE Yogesh, ENERA president Ravindra Kumar, ST RWA President Rajendra Babu, 6th Block RWA President Jayaramu, Dr Umeshwara from 5th Block and others took part.
