It was Wednesday morning after two days continuous downpour, the life and traffic was returning to normal in Koramangala. Traffic was moving as usual on the 18th Main Road of 6th Block in Koramangala around 9 am.
Suddenly, a large crunching sound rends the air. One of the huge trees – Gulmohar comes down crushing on the road snapping power lines near the Devi Eye Hospital Road and the Koramangala Club Road junction. A Tempo Traveller was caught inbetween the branches. Luckily no one was hurt, but the vehicle’s front portion was damaged.
Soon BESCOM team rushes to the spot to fix the snapped power lines. In the mentime, BBMP Forest official lead by Sheshadri arrives to the spot to clear the tree blocking the road. Koramangala ward Corporator M Chandrappa, Adugodi Traffic Police Inspector Ramesh Kumar, Koramangala Ward Congress President Govardhan Reddy and others visit the spot to oversee the restoration work.
Several residents complain to the Corporator Chandrappa on the problems faced by them due to these brittle trees.
Hearing the complaints, the Corporator assured to solve them and even directed the BBMP men to trim the threatening branches.
It may be recalled that several trees had been uprooted on this particular road in the last few months whenever it rained.
Residents of this road had been complaining to BBMP Forest Cell, to trim the over grown trees as well as to remove the diseased trees. This particular tree that was right in front of a senior resident Shenoy’s house who had even wrote a letter to the BBMP forest cell a year ago to trim the over grown branches so as to balance the tree weight.
Nearly 25 years ago Shenoys purchased the house on seeing the greenery surrounding the house as well as the layout. But they never thought that these trees would be a threat to life and property.
It is high time that similar trees that are posing a threat to life and property need to be removed or trimmed.
