Bengaluru’s very own Odissi dance festival, NAMAN, is back with its 6th edition. City’s premier Odissi dance institution, Nrityantar will present its annual Odissi dance festival, NAMAN 2015 on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at 4:30 pm at ADA Rangamandira, J C Road.
Living up to its reputation as city’s must-see dance event, the festival showcases the finest of Odissi dancers to Bengaluru’s ardent art lovers. A major highlight of city’s rich & growing cultural calendar, this immensely popular Odissi dance festival is the most awaited of all art events in town as it offers sumptuous array of finest Odissi dance performances.
The festival is a humble initiative by Bengaluru-based Odissi dance institution, Nrityantar, to bring together and showcase varied styles and schools of Odissi dance. ‘Naman’, literally meaning ‘salutation’, is a tribute to the Guru, the visible embodiment of God. The festival pays rich tributes to great gurus of Odissi dance for their invaluable contributions in the growth and popularisation of this extremely elegant art. It is an event where audiences not only get the opportunity to experience beauty, richness & nuances of different styles & schools of Odissi dance by its finest exponents but they also enjoy and appreciate contributions & works of the great gurus & pioneers.
With fully packed & over-flowing halls, the festival has been very well received by everyone in its previous editions and has featured some of the biggest names in the field, like Aruna Mohanty, Sangeeta Dash and Bijayini Satapathy. In its 6th year now, NAMAN that was inaugurated by renowned Odissi guru, Guru Gangadhar Pradhan in the year 2010, has grown as one of the most sought after Odissi dance events in the country.
With soft lilting tunes on resonating beats of mardala, rhythmic sounds of ankle bells and lyrical & graceful moves, the evening will celebrate the perfect communion of beauty, grace, melody, rhythm, movement and expression. The audiovisual feast promises to transport viewers to the enchanted delight of spiritual ecstasy and divine bliss. The Suravi Odissi Dance Ensemble under Guru Pitambar Biswal will showcase beauty of Guru Debaprasad style. A recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri and Central Sangeet Natak Akademi awards amongst many other accolades, a torchbearer of Odissi dance internationally, performer, choreographer and teacher for numerous decades, Padma Shri Madhavi Mudgal is an artiste par excellence. She will spellbind viewers with beauty & elegance of her art. Finale will have a must-see visual spectacle by the internationally acclaimed Srjan Odissi Dance Ensemble from Bhubaneswar, under the artistic direction of Guru Ratikant Mohapatra son of the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. The ensemble will surely enthrall everyone with their captivating moves, powerful imagery, exceptional synchronicity, awe-inspiring geometry & seamless symmetry.
The performances will start promptly at 5:30 pm with Suravi Odissi Dance Ensemble, followed by Padma Shri Madhavi Mudgal and Srjan Odissi Dance Ensemble. The evening performances will be preceded by an engaging panel discussion at 4:30 pm with senior gurus, dancers, scholars, dance enthusiasts, aspirants and experts on ‘The state of art of Odissi dance’.
